Job Description:

A leading law firm is seeking a qualified candidate for a Counsel position to support its tax-exempt organization practice. The successful candidate may choose to work in one of the following offices: Charlotte, Charlottesville, Chicago, Richmond, Tysons, or Washington, D.C.

The Private Wealth Services Group is a diversely skilled team providing a wide range of legal and financial assistance for business and high-net-worth clients. Our services include business tax, employee benefits and executive compensation, and private wealth services. The team is composed of key partners with experience gained as stakeholders and government officials who played roles in shaping the laws, policies, and enforcement measures we navigate on behalf of our clients.

We represent individuals, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and other business entities in tax audits at federal, state, and local government levels. Our team regularly represents clients before federal, state, and local tax authorities; in state trial and appellate courts; and in the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. Court of Federal Claims, federal district courts, and federal courts of appeals. Our private wealth services team focuses on the unique needs of high-net-worth clients worldwide, including estate planning, gift and estate tax law, and family business succession issues.

The firm values diversity and inclusion as essential components of business and prioritizes these principles in recruitment, retention, and promotion practices for both lawyers and staff. We offer competitive benefits, a competitive salary with hours and merit bonus opportunities, billable hours credit for pro bono work, and a hybrid remote option that supports flexibility and work-life balance.

Job Requirements:

  • The ideal candidate should possess experience representing a wide range of clients, including public charities, major colleges and universities, hospitals, healthcare organizations, publicly supported organizations, supporting organizations, family and corporate private foundations, and charitable and scholarship trusts. This includes governance, endowment, and investment matters; federal tax rules applicable to private foundations, such as self-dealing, excess business holding, and taxable expenditure issues; participation in joint ventures; and managing consequences of unrelated trade or business activities.
  • Experience working with charitable institutions and their development teams, as well as high-net-worth donors on structuring planned gifts to charitable organizations, is also essential. This includes the use of charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, charitable gift annuities, and other complex gifts.
